Hydraulics - Roof Drainage Systems
Rainheads are often used at the end of a box gutter. Design and installation of rainheads should be in accordance with the requirements of the National Construction Codes (NCC) and AS/NZS3500.3.
A primary function of a rainhead is to manage the overflow of rainwater through the downpipe. Occasionally the rainfall will exceed the design flow capacity of the downpipe. In this instance the surge is accommodated by the rainhead until the water is level with the bottom of the weir opening. The excess water flows over the weir thus preventing rainwater from entering into a building.
The NCC and AS/NZS3500.3 amongst other requirements, has strict requirements for the weir opening dimensions and the height of the bottom of the weir opening with respect to the sole of the box gutter. Any rainhead which does not comply with the NCC's and Australian Standards' requirements are non-compliant and the non-compliances have to be corrected. This could involve removing the non-compliant rainhead and replacing it with a compliant one.
